You are warmly invited to GRUND, an extensive exhibition of painting and sculpture by Stefan Schiek. Figurative and abstract works develop an aesthetic, formal picture of the artist’s reductive practice.
Schiek’s high gloss acrylic layered paintings depict enigmatic scenes of the end of mankind. Riverbeds, forests and swamplands play host to protagonists searching for answers and meaning as the end of existence draws near. Flashes of neon colour and protective clothing feature in the mysterious subject matter of Schiek’s narrative worlds. The artist develops both figurative and abstract settings in one. The two series Warpaintings and Candies are produced through vertical drip painting and embossing, providing a stark contrast to figurative elements in these works. A further contrast is made between the fine brush work of the highgloss top layers of Schiek’s paintings and the physical pressure these layers are subject to during production. By applying paint, then sanding it back, a soft colour gradient becomes visible in juxtaposition to bright monochrome colour blocks. The title of the exhibition GRUND refers not only to the artists applied practice but to the setting and action of the paintings themselves.
GRUND thus encompasses both the exploration of materials used in production, as well as the poignant narrative of the works. GRUND poses scrutinizing questions regarding the cause and effect of human activity, as the artists physical process mirrors his subject matter.
