MS Dhoni Did Something Unthinkable for Gary Kirsten
Former Indian captain MS Dhoni and ex India Coach Gary Kirsten used to share a great bond when they were the captain and coach respectively. And it was no wonder that India won the World cup in 2011 and became the no. 1 Test team under the duo. However, Kirsten shared that Dhoni is one of the most impressive people whom he ever met.
Recently in a chat on The RK Show on YouTube, he said that Dhoni is not only the most impressive people but he is also a great leader of people. And the most important thing about Dhoni is that he is loyal.
While talking about Dhoni, Kirsten recalled an incident where he was not allowed to enter in an event. Since he wasn’t allowed, Dhoni did not go there as well. He said that he would never forget that. It was before the World Cup when they were invited in Bangalore to go to the flight school and have a look at that.
While the whole team was excited to go to the event, it was not only Gary Kirsten but two other South Africans - Paddy Upton and Eric Simmons who were also the support staff back then, also not allowed in the event as it was seen as a potential security risk and after that what the then India captain MS Dhoni did was totally unthinkable.
“MS cancelled the whole event. He just said, ‘These are my people. If they’re not allowed in, none of us are going’. And that was what he was about,” Kirsten revealed. “He was very loyal, to me, and I think he saw as well, there were times when we didn’t always win games and we’d have some tough times. We’d spend a lot of time, just one on one together, talking through, taking the team forward. I think we built a strong relationship in the three years we had together.”
